Walmart plans to prioritize hiring military spouses, becoming the largest U.S. company to make such a commitment, the statement said. Military Spouse Career Connection, Walmart's new military spouse recruiting and hiring initiative, builds on Veterans Welcome Home's 2013 commitment, enhanced in 2015, to hire 250,000 military veterans by 2020, a goal it will surpass next year.

"Walmart was a seamless transition for me as a veteran," says Steven Lee, Amherst, store manager and U.S. Army veteran. “I served as an infantryman in the US Army and working with a company with a clear chain of command and structure made it easy for me to succeed. I am also very proud of what my company is doing for veterans who are now transitioning to civilian life. Since Memorial Day 2013, Walmart has hired more than 200,000 veterans. I'm proud to not only be a veteran, I'm proud to work for Walmart.”
Walmart honored veterans, their spouses and families across the country with dozens of ceremonies and in-store events. Nationally, Walmart employees and local stores shared "thank you" messages on Facebook to veterans and their families.
"Military spouses are the unsung heroes," Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon said today during a Veterans Day ceremony at the company's headquarters in Bentonville. "They serve in partnership with their spouses in uniform and we want to honor them and help them find a job or build a great career. To military spouses: You have a home at Walmart!"
There are more than 500,000 active duty military spouses nationwide. While the U.S. unemployment rate nationally is four percent, military spouses face a 26 percent unemployment rate and a 25 percent pay gap compared to their civilian counterparts. As many as 77 percent of these spouses want or need work, but frequent moves are often a barrier to finding and maintaining a rewarding career, according to the Department of Defense Military Spouse Employment Partnership.
Walmart Foundation Grant Supports Women Veterans
"We have an obligation to respect veterans and military families," says retired Brig. Gen. Gary Profit, senior director of military programs for Walmart. “But more importantly, they are a huge asset to our company. Military spouses share many of the same leadership qualities seen in veterans, but they are disproportionately underemployed. We welcome them to Walmart and hope they consider us as the next step in their career journey."
