Heavy duty extended mobility vehicles are tactical 8 x 8 diesel tactical trucks used by the US Army. Known as the "Dragon Truck," the HEMTT first entered Army service in 1985, replacing the M520 Goer truck. More than 13,000 HEMTTs are in service today.

The main mission of the HEMTT is to provide a heavy vehicle for the resupply of combat vehicles and weapons. Its cargo capacity and off-road capabilities make it the ultimate sports car.

Introduced in 1985, the HEMTT is the mainstay of the US Army fleet. After 1991, cars began to perform poorly. In 2001, the HEMTT Recapitalization Program was established by Oshkosh and the US Army. Under the program, new and refurbished vehicles were provided to several priority units. By 2003, approximately 621 trucks had been contracted for repairs.
In December 2002, the US Army and Oshkosh established the R3 (Recovery, Repair and Return) program to increase the turnover of HEMTTs.
The program has been a huge success, reducing turnaround time to 100 days, including shipping time. After the R3 program, cars received the R1 designation in their model numbers.
In 2005, Oshkosh Corporation began building the next generation HEMTT A3 after receiving a grant from the US Department of Defense. The cars cleared performance and endurance tests over the next 18 months.

In June 2008, the US Army awarded its first replacement contract for HEMTT A2s. A second modification agreement designated HEMTT A2 vehicles as HEMTT A4s.
Oshkosh has a total of 11 HEMTT variants in six editions. I have five trucks, a fuel truck, two tractor trailers, a separate forklift, and a forklift that converts into a repair vehicle with cranes and winches.
Standard foldable features include front and rear towing eyes, fog lights, a 24-volt electrical system and a rear blade hitch for towing trailers and weapons.
Bag versions, models M977 A2 and M985 A2, are used to carry equipment, especially ammunition. The rear sections of the vehicles are equipped with cranes 33.4 feet long, 8 feet wide and 9.3 feet high.
